So, yesterday the Hillcrest Farmers Market was outstanding (as usual) and the Baby Bundt Cakes completely sold out!  Key Lime Rum and the Chocolate Whiskey proved to be quite popular.   I will have them again on May 4th, which also is the “official opening” of the season for the market.   More vendors and more fun!

Mother’s Day is coming!  May 12th is the big day.  How to celebrate Mom… gifts or flowers?  Brunch or dinner or lunch?  A delicious Katie Connally Confections rum cake or chocolate whiskey cake?  Okay, we do want all of that stuff (especially the cakes)!  As a mother myself I can tell you of a few sure things some of us want, and that includes YOUR TIME.  To talk, to laugh, to remember.   We want you to know and love and respect God.   We want you to pray.  We want your smile, your trust and most of all, your safety and happiness.  We want you to brush your teeth and wash your hands, no matter how old you are.  We want you to eat well and be well.  We want you to remember everyone makes mistakes (including moms) and that whatever mistake is buggin’ you right now, you were NOT the first person to make it.  One hundred years from now there will be all new people occupying this Earth, so keep your perspective on mistakes reasonable.  We want you to know your worth, which is priceless.  We want you to know the past is called the past because it is past, so don’t let anyone dredge it up.

Yes, we saw you hide your peas under the mashed potatoes.

Yes, we know the dog did not do it.  Neither did the cat.

Yes, we saw the scratch/dent/chip on the car and chose not to say anything.

 Yes, we know when you said you were sleeping over at a friend’s house but “just decided to come home super early”, you were only covering your tracks about breaking curfew.  I mean, come on.  Be free with graciousness, as you can clearly see we were/are with you.

We want you to remember the history of your marvelous country and that freedom is not free.  We want you to remember why Memorial Day is much more than a 3-day weekend.  We want you to be careful but not afraid.  We want you to be bold but not reckless.  We want you to be thrifty but not cheap.  We want you to know quality and quantity are not the same.

We have already taught you these things and much, much more, but as "mother" we get to repeat them.  Because we said so.

Most of all, we want you to know we love you.

What makes our Whiskey Cakes so delicious?  The chocolate or the whiskey?  Which came first?  And what exactly is whiskey?  One definition is “water of life”.  Whether or not we agree with that definition, this stuff played a huge part in history, i.e., the “Prohibition Era” in the U.S.   Yeah, that worked.   Thankfully there are no restrictions in this day and age, so you may order all the Whiskey & Rum Cakes you like!  When they are baking the aroma fills the house and is just delightful.  My family always wants to know if there will be one for them to enjoy.  Sometimes, yes, but sometimes, no.  Today, however, the answer is “yes”, so smiles all around!

This week’s flavors are Chocolate Whiskey and Golden Butter Rum.  We will be at the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Saturday, 8a – 12Noon, 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd in Little Rock.  If it rains we will be inside the church gym, so don’t hesitate to come out.  While you are there you can place your order for Mother’s Day (May 12th), Memorial Day (May 27th), and Father’s Day (June 16th), or you can send me an email: katieconnallyconfections@littlerockwoman.com with your order and I will send you an invoice.
Our flavors are:

* Chocolate Whiskey Cake (our signature cake)

* Golden Butter Rum Bundt Cake

* Chocolate Rum Cake

* Salted Caramel Whiskey Cake

* Key Lime Rum Cake (June - August only)

* Lemon Whiskey Cake (June - August only)

* Bourbon Balls (November 15th - December 20th only)

Final note: What’s coming soon? Baby Bundt Cakes!  Perfect for a single serving and they also make a lovely presentation at parties as each guest gets their own desert.  You can fill the center with the season’s upcoming fresh berries then top with a dollop of whipped cream.   A great idea for all you elegant hostesses!

May your weekend be wonderful and filled with love,

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

Thank you for all you do!

Yesterday was our first day at the Hillcrest Farmers Market with our Chocolate Whiskey Cakes and Golden Butter Rum Cakes. Enjoyed every minute!  Hillcrest Farmers Market is a year-round community service of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church in Little Rock,  Arkansas.

The morning started off very cold, but clear and beautiful.  Chris from Little Rock Urban Farming helped us set up our tent and table.  Actually, he did the whole thing!  Our vendor neighbors included Ethan’s Heirloom Gardens which offers heirloom, open pollinated non-GMO plants and produce.  Ellyse’s Studio Arts offers beautiful pen and ink watercolor artwork.  North Pulaski Farms, Granny’s Garden, and Barnhill Orchards also had beautiful booths with lovely flowers, fruit and produce.   The samples of our Chocolate Whiskey Cake were a big hit and we had a blast.

Although they are open year-round, May 4 will be the “official” opening day for the season at Hillcrest Farmers Market.  If you are local be sure to stop by!  If not, you can always place an order for one of our wonderful cakes on-line.  E-mail your order to me and I will send an invoice or call 501-747-1073.

Cuisinart Cookware…bow down, people! Just incredible products that make baking even more enjoyable.
True story: two years ago, way before Katie Connally Confections was even a twinkle in my eye, I bought my first set of Cuisinart Cookware. Found it on craigslist, and this sweet girl was moving out of state and wanted to sell some of her items. Since I found the listing on craigslist I agreed to meet her in a public place, which turned out to be her job at Fresh Market. Anyhoo, she was selling her Cuisinart stockpot with lid, two sauce pans with lids and two fry pans for the amazing sum of $25.00!! Could have knocked me over with a feather. What an incredible bargain! So I happily paid for them and went on my merry way.
Fast forward to today. Here I am with a new baking business and the perfect cookware to support it. How perfect? Well, last weekend I decided to make three Chocolate Whiskey Cakes (CWC) at the same time. Please note I only have two Cuisinart sauce pans, so I used my old standby aluminum sauce pan. Right off the bat I could tell something was not right. The Cuisinart sauce pans produced the usual delicious sauce for the CWCs, but the batch in the old standby pan would not adhere. The mixture separated and simply would not blend. Because I did not want to waste the sauce I continued on until all three cakes were baked. Two came out beautifully as usual. The third one? That cake was as lopsided as the Tower of Pisa! Tasted the same but definitely could not be sold, which made my family very happy so it turned out okay. The moral of the story? Invest in good cookware for great results and Cuisinart is a great place to start. Visit them at: http://www.cuisinart.com.
For our local buyers I will be at the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Kavanaugh starting Saturday morning, April 20th, with Chocolate Whiskey Cakes and Golden Butter Rum Cakes, so stop by and get one or two. All produced with my Cuisinart pans, so there isn’t a lopsided cake in the bunch! See you tomorrow morning J

Gorgeous, right?  Yeah, they are!  Looking forward to wearing them tomorrow as I sneeze my way through the pollen that comes this time of year.  But my earrings will be twinkling, so there's that!

Who could say it better, I ask you???  Yay for Fridays!  For me, when the weekend arrives it means more time to bake cakes.  Just me, smooth jazz courtesy of AT&T Uverse, and all of the delicious ingredients that go into each and every cake…a lovely way to bake.  If you are not familiar with AT&T Uverse, I suggest you check them out.  They have great deals and their customer service is outstanding!  http://www.att.com/u-verse.

I think you have to have a heart for baking to get great results…a cake that is moist, tender and almost melts in your mouth.  One gentleman said our Chocolate Whiskey Cake is so good he likes to “eat it slowly to make it last”.  Praise, indeed!

Bless all our friends and family members in Arkansas and Missouri that were affected by the storms yesterday.  Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  They have survived with damages but no loss of life in Arkansas, which is wonderful.  One way you can help is by making a donation to the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/arkansas).  You'll be glad you did.

Thankfully the sun is coming out now and our family and friends will better that much sooner.  Hooray!

I'm in love with...my "new" Hobart/KitchenAid stand mixer!  Yep, this baby is a classic and I am so thankful to have it.  Whoever named the company "KitchenAid" knew exactly what they were doing.  This is a huge aid in my cake company.  My grandmother (the Katie Connally of "Katie Connally Confections"), had a KitchenAid.  No wonder, their products are superior, beautiful and long-lasting.  The better to make fabulous whiskey and rum cakes, my dears!  A true baker's mixer is now in my very own kitchen...Katie Connally would approve.  Nowadays they come in a variety of delicious colors from "Empire Red" to "Copper Pearl".  Mine is in standard white, and that works for me.  They also make dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges and more.  My dream kitchen will be fully equipped with KitchenAid.  Meanwhile, I have the perfect mixer for cakes, so place your order today!  Visit  KitchenAid and get your kitchen going: www.kitchenaid.com.
